Course in Basic Divination (Diloggun) Final Details

Course in Basic Divination: Diloggún (Final Details)

Instructor: Ócháni Lele (Stuart Myers)

Email: bstuartmyers@gmail.com

Required Text: Lele, Ócháni. The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination (Destiny Books, 2000).

Course Description: This is a seventeen week (four month) course. It will meet once a week via Skype OR in the instructor’s home. This course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of the diloggún and the dynamics of divination. The course will supply background information necessary for more advanced coursework in the spiritual science of the diloggún as well as the necessary information related to basic divination. It will cover the manipulations of the oracle, Lucumí prayer and invocation, the concepts of iré and osogbo, proper use of ibó, and the art of marking ebó. Through a series of lectures the twelve root odu Okana (1) through Ejila Shebora (12) will be investigated. This course will involve questions, exercises, and exams to improve critical thinking skills which are essential to the work of a diviner. Material presented in the course will follow the flow of the book “The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination;” however, the material presented will delve more deeply into the material than the written text provides.

Prerequisites: Students must be initiates who have successfully completed ebó meta. Iyawós may participate in class with the godparent’s permission, and permission will be verified by the instructor. Remember: if a iyawó does obtain the godparent’s permission to attend class, and if the iyawó attends a real-time class, the godparent must attend the orientation with the iyawó. There are protocols to be followed when a iyawó comes to another santero’s home. Proof of ordination and three-month ebó is required to sign up for the course. All initiations must be verifiable.

Course Schedule

As there will be five major exams plus frequent quizzes, the course material is divided into five major units.

Unit I: Manipulating the Diloggún, the Oracle of the Orishas

The material for this series of lectures will come from chapter one of “The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination.” It will be divided into the following units: prayer and invocation, the use of ibó and picking hands, marking iré and osogbo, and marking ebó. There will be a quiz on each unit and a comprehensive test on that material. Students MUST pass all quizzes and tests or will be dropped from the class. The rationale for this is simple: if you cannot master manipulation of the oracle, you cannot divine. Students who are not able to pass the exam will be offered a seat in the next cycle of basic divination courses.

Unit Two: Okana through Ogundá

The material for this series of lectures will be based on chapters two through four of “The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination.” Lectures will include proverbs, patakís (an essential element not covered in the text), positive and negative meanings of the odu, and essential ebós for the protection of the diviner and the client. There will be a quiz on each unit. Upon completion of the unit (comprised of three separate lectures) a take-home, “blue-book” style exam will be given.

Unit Three: Irosun through Obara

The material from this series of lectures will be based on chapters five through seven of “The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination.” Lectures will include proverbs, patakís (an essential element not covered in the text), positive and negative meanings of the odu, and essential ebós for the protection of the diviner and the client. There will be a quiz on each unit. Upon completion of the unit (comprised of three separate lectures) a take-home, “blue-book” style exam will be given.

Unit Four: Odí through Osá

The material from this series of lectures will be based on chapters eight through ten of “The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination.” Lectures will include proverbs, patakís, positive and negative meanings of the odu, and essential ebós for the protection of the diviner and client. There will be a quiz on each unit. Upon completion of the unit (comprised of three separate lectures), a take-home, “blue-book” style exam will be given.

Unit Five: Ofún through Ejila Shebora

The material from this series of lectures will be based on chapters eleven through thirteen of “The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination.” Lectures will include proverbs, patakís, positive and negative meanings of the odu, and essential ebós for the protection of the diviner and client. There will be a quiz on each unit. Upon completion of the unit (comprised of three separate lectures), a take-home, “blue-book” style exam will be given.

Final Exam

After completion of the course, a one-on-one final exam either in person or via Skype will be given. Using a practice set of shells, the student will conduct a make-believe divination session from beginning to end to prove that all skills and course objectives have been met.
